Virginia Smith of Earlville Named Dunham Scholar at Aurora University

2011 Nov 16

Virginia Smith of Earlville is among 10 Aurora University business students named Dunham Scholars for the 2011-12 academic year.

Smith, a junior business and commerce and marketing major and Earlville High School graduate, will be awarded full tuition at AU. Dunham Scholars are chosen based on scholarship, character, work ethic and commitment to service. The program was created in 1996 with the philanthropic support of the late Aurora businessman and entrepreneur John Dunham and his estate.

"The objective of this most generous program was made clear at the program's outset by John Dunham," said Shawn Green, AU Professor of Marketing. "He wanted to assist accomplished, well-rounded students who have a sense of what it means to give back to society, and who will develop an ethical framework along with the skills to be successful in our free enterprise system."

Students may apply for the scholarships during their junior year. Scholars are required to maintain a cumulative grade-point average above 3.0, and contribute up to 10 hours per week of service to community-based, not-for-profit organizations. The scholarship is renewable for a student's senior year if academic and service requirements are met.
